Red Phalarope • Phalaropus fulicarius

LENGTH 8 IN.

Highly pelagic during both spring and fall passage, Red Phalaropes are rarely seen on the shoreline of the coast, but when blown inshore by gale-force northwest winds, numbers can be impressive. Tens of thousands migrate 10 to 50 miles offshore and are easily seen from ocean-going boats, but this species never willingly goes to land except to breed, in the high Arctic.

Most Red Phalaropes winter south of the equator, but a few remain here most years and are sometimes seen from shore. This is the only one of the three species to be expected along the coast in winter.
